I’m not much of a cafe bagel sandwich guy, but a couple months ago my wife and I were out for a drive here in Vegas and decided to give Einstein Bros Bagels a try. If you haven’t been there yet, they’re basically just like Starbucks – but with bagel sandwiches. They have coffee too, but their thing is bagel sandwiches.
I honestly forget what I tried that first time there. I liked it, but I didn’t like it enough to come back and pay five bucks for another one.
I did, however, sign up for their email list, and lo and behold, they sent me a coupon when my birthday rolled around.
So, I went in a couple days after my birthday and got my free, fancy bagel sandwich. Again, it was actually pretty good.
But then again…five bucks is just a bit out of my comfort zone for breakfast sandwiches, so I won’t likely be back for another 363 days, unless I win that Powerball, baby!
Here’s what I had this time…
This time around I got the spinach, mushroom and Swiss bagel sandwich. It comes with, uh, spinach, mushroom and Swiss cheese. And egg. It was served on a multi-grain bagel with all kinds of seeds all over it. I think I’ll pass on the seeds next time. I mean, it tasted fine, but I think a plain white or sourdough bagel would have been better with the other ingredients.
I also had a medium orange juice. Technically, to get the free sandwich I had to buy a drink at regular price. If I had looked at the beverage prices before ordering, there’s no way I would have go the OJ. It cost almost three bucks! I probably should’ve got the coffee or even a soda.
The service was fast, friendly and accurate, so nothing to complain about there. The restaurant was also clean and well-kept. Well, actually the soda machine’s ice dispenser was broken, but other than that, everything was in good shape.
And now I’m inspired to do THIS…
MAKE MY OWN FANCY SHMANCY BAGEL BREAKFAST SAMMICH!!!
I’m such a cheap bastard haha. So now I’m thinking I should just go buy those same ingredients and make my own bagel sandwich. I wonder how much it would cost to make my own at home?
Let’s find out…
- 1 bagel — $0.25
- 1 egg — $0.30
- 1 slice Swiss cheese — $0.20
- 1 mushroom — $0.25
- 6 spinach leaves — $0.10
That’s not a whole lot, and I’m probably being generous with the mushroom and spinach (and who knows if they’re actually fresh or frozen at Einstein’s). So yeah, there ya go. You can make your own Einstein Bros Spinach, Mushroom and Swiss Bagel sandwich at home for just over a dollar.
What about the orange juice? Okay, so according to their website, the medium OJ at Einstein’s is a pint, so that would be 16 ounces. So at that rate, their OJ costs $22.32 per gallon vs. $5.99 at the grocery store. So my 16 ounce orange juice at home would cost me $0.75.
So the sandwich and an orange juice would come in at under $2.00, if I make it at home.
Well, there ya go.
I’m not much fun, am I? 😉
